NEB Grade 12 results out, 52.91 percent pass the exams

KATHMANDU, Aug 3: The National Examination Board (NEB), Sanothimi, released the grade 12 results on its website on Friday.

Dr Mahashram Sharma, the chairman of the NEB, announced that 52.91 percent of Grade XII students have been graded this year, an improvement of three percent compared to last year.

A total of 390,868 students participated in the examination, which took place from April 26 to May 8. Among them, 203,847 students passed, while 187,021 students failed, resulting in a non-graded rate of 47.09 percent.

Among the students who passed, 9,591 achieved a GPA of 3.61 to 4. This includes 6,752 students from Bagmati Province, while only 24 students from Karnali Province attained this GPA. Additionally, 46,893 students received a GPA between 3.21 and 3.60, and 78,075 students obtained a GPA between 2.81 and 3.20.

Out of the total examinees, 5,632 students did not appear for any subject, and the examination of 102 students was canceled.

This year, out of 385,632 students who participated in the regular Grade XII exams, 231,235 students successfully passed, including those who benefited from grade enhancement. In comparison to previous years, the results show some variation: 28.26 percent of students passed the grade increase examinations in 2078/79, whereas the pass rate was significantly higher at 62.5 percent in 2076/77.

As per the Letter Grading Guideline-2078, students must achieve a minimum of 35 percent marks in each subject in theory, equating to at least 26.25 marks out of 75 to avoid a Non-Graded (NG) result, indicating failure.

Experts say that the results of this year highlight significant challenges in certain subjects. In compulsory English, 72.10 percent of students passed, leaving 102,206 with an NG result.

Education experts have criticized current teaching methods, citing inadequate preparation on part of the teachers as a major concern. There are also questions about the effectiveness of English language instruction, with some noting that students often struggle with the language despite early exposure.

The results show the need for improvement in other subjects as well. A total of 47,733 out of 188,203 participants in accounting received NG. In Social Studies and Life Skills Education, 51,891 out of 317,661 students failed and 8,608 out of 57,270 participants in Mathematics received NG.

Experts attribute these results to teaching quality and call for a review of teaching methods and teacher evaluations, while highlighting the need for the Ministry of Education and universities to improve teacher training and standards.

Students with NG or absence in one or two subjects are eligible to take the grade increase examination, scheduled for September 10 and 11. Those with NG in more than two subjects will need to reappear for the exam next year.

Results can be viewed on the National Examination Board’s website at www.neb.gov.np or ruselt.neb.gov.np, and Nepal Telecom’s website at www.neb.ntc.net.np. Results are also available via SMS by typing "NEB," followed by a space and the symbol number, and sending it to 1600. Nepal Telecom users can send an SMS to 1601.
