KATHMANDU, Jan 14: Devidhwoj Basnet, a prominent democracy fighter and senior leader of the Nepali Congress, has passed away at the age of 98. He was born in Likhukhola of Solukhumbu district.
Basnet was an active member of a group that overthrew the Rana regime in the 2007 BS revolution. He served as a commander of the Nepali Congress’ Liberation Army, leading the fight for democracy in areas like Charikot.

In the 2015 general election, Basnet's family played a key role in the NCs’ success in constituency-3 in eastern Nepal. Following the party's two-thirds majority win, Basnet was elected as a representative to the Central Intellectuals' Assembly.
Basnet was also elected as the Pradhan Pancha during the Panchayat era and later served as the chairman of Chaurikharka VDC following the 2049 BS local elections.
He was the brother of the late Purushottam Basnet, a historian and Constituent Assembly member representing the Nepali Congress, and the uncle of former Minister Ambika Basnet. Basnet is survived by his son, Keshavdhwoj Basnet, and daughters, Anardevi and Angur Basnet.
