Late Basnet a tireless freedom fighter: Former President Dr Yadav

KATHMANDU, May 24: Former President Dr Ram Baran Yadav hailed the late Purusottam Basnet, Nepali Congress (NC) leader and member of the Constituent Assembly, as the ''tireless freedom fighter''.

KATHMANDU, May 24: Former President Dr Ram Baran Yadav hailed the late Purusottam Basnet, Nepali Congress (NC) leader and member of the Constituent Assembly, as the ''tireless freedom fighter''.


At a condolence assembly organized by the BP Koirala Memorial Trust here today on the 13th memorial day of Basnet, former President Yadav praised Basnet as a leader who consistently struggled for the establishment of democracy.


"Basnet's contribution in safeguarding the existence of Nepali Congress is important. Our contribution to the party is comparatively lesser than that of Basnet," remarked Yadav.

He viewed that the literary works penned by late Basnet should be preserved by the Trust.


Similarly, scholar Dr Abhi Subedi lauded Basnet's contribution to Nepali literature.


Present in the assembly were NC President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and other NC leaders such as Dr Shekhar Koirala and Trust's officials among others.


Late Basnet had published Nepal Pukar, the mouthpiece of the Nepali Congress. He had also written 'Outline of the history of Nepali Congress' in two volumes.


Late Basnet had also served as the former Chairperson of the Gorkhapatra Corporation and worked as an editor for several literature-based papers and magazines. He was imprisoned for a total of nine years over different times during his political career, it was shared.
