KATHMANDU, Jan 13: A total of 1.674 million Nepalis went abroad in 2024, with 66,835 leaving for permanent residence. The figures, provided by the Department of Immigration, reveal that among those leaving, 1.2 million were men and 467,257 were women.
Of those who left for permanent residence, 34,544 were men and 32,287 were women. Additionally, 131,797 Nepalis went abroad to join family members, with a higher number of women (77,257) compared to men (54,531).

A significant number of Nepalis, 856,422, left the country seeking employment abroad. Among these, 769,890 were men, and 96,197 were women. The number of students going abroad for education in 2024 was 119,409, with 64,335 men and 55,068 women.
Other reasons for leaving included tourism (274,428 people), business (20,101 people), medical treatment (18,713 people), and attending conferences or seminars (24,262 people).
Compared to 2023, the number of Nepalis leaving the country in 2024 increased by over 70,000, with the majority seeking work or permanent settlement abroad.
