KATHMANDU, March 30: Supporters of the former king and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) have accused Kathmandu Mayor Balendra (Balen) Shah of staging a stunt by linking the former king to the protest.

They have launched a campaign to raise funds to pay the fine, arguing that the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has unfairly connected the former king to the people's movement.

Tourism promoter Rameshraj Bastola, who has supported monarchists on social media, has started a campaign saying, "Here, I am ready to give Rs 50,000; who else is there? Let's all contribute together." The campaign is currently collecting funds.

KMC fined former King Gyanendra Shah NPR 793,000 for vandalism and littering during Friday's protest in Tinkune.

The KMC delivered the fine notice to Nirmal Niwas (the former king's residence) on Sunday. The fine has been slapped through eight separate notices, one for each of Gyanendra Shah and Nirmal Niwas.
