KATHMANDU, Jan 15: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is installing a dry riser system in narrow alleys of the city where fire trucks cannot reach during a fire. The Disaster Management Department of the KMC is leading this initiative, where the center’s projects and the wards are installing the system using their own budget.

Fire controllers from the Juddha Barun Yantra Karyalaya are testing the installed pipes. They plan to use the dry riser, a dry pipeline, to extinguish fires in narrow streets and alleys where fire trucks cannot reach. When regular water flows through it, it becomes a wet riser.

The dry riser has inlets at both ends and outlets placed every 45-75 meters. Fire trucks pump water through the inlet, and they can access it from the outlet as needed. The delivery hose controls the fire, and water at a pressure of 8 bar can reach up to the seventh floor of a building.
