364 corruption cases against local units in eastern Nepal

ITAHARI, March 22: With the implementation of federalism in the country, corruption has reportedly developed deep roots in various local units in eastern Nepal. 


In the fiscal year 2018/19 alone, as many as 364 corruption complaints have been filed against local units of 14 districts in the eastern region, according to Itahari-based regional office of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

Majority of the complaints are against local units of Saptari, Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa while Solukhumbu, Taplejung and Okhaldhunga have fewer complaints. Most of the complaints of irregularities are related to the education sector. 


As many as 202 corruption complaints are filed in the education sector. Land Reforms Office is comes second with 67 complaints while the district forest office is third with 47 complaints, informed CIAA regional office’s spokesperson and undersecretary, Narendra Bhattarai. 


According to CIAA, many of the local units have not adhered to the Procurement Act during purchase. It has been raising awareness against such issues by organizing various programs.
