Over 2,300 online media registered in Nepal as of today

KATHMANDU, Feb 18: The number of online media registered in Nepal has increased lately. 


According to the Department of Information and Broadcast, 478 new online media have been registered in the country in fiscal year 2077/78 so far. In fiscal year 2075/76, a total of 550 online media were registered and 17 were re-registered. Likewise, 272 were renewed. 


In fiscal year 2076/77 BS, a total of 561 online media were registered, according to the department. Similarly, 272 online media companies were renewed in the fiscal year.

As of now total 2,325 online media have been registered in the country. President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Govinda Acharaya said that the online media which has emerged as the mainstream media should pay attention toward maintaining trust and credibility.


"The quality of some online media is still under question. Some online journalists are found publishing and disseminating news against the code of ethics. It has to be well-regulated with the compliance of ethics". 


Likewise, 7,807 print media including dailies, weeklies, fort-nightlies, monthlies/bi-monthlies, quarterlies, half-yearlies and yearly magazines have been so far registered. 


A total of 1,127 FM radios and 202 television channels have obtained operational licenses so far. RSS
