POKHARA, Sept 18: The commuters in Manang district have breathed a sigh of relief as Humde Airport can now operate regular flights. This is also expected to promote tourism in the Himalayan district.

The regular flights started after the airport authority recently completed the renovation of the runaway. For years the travelers had to wait for days to for a plane to take off from the muddy airstrip. After three years of renovation, the 600-meter runway has now been extended by 300 meters and its surface has tarmac. [break]

According to Pratap Babu Tiwari at Nepal Airline Corporation (NAC) office in Pokhara, the flights were now possible throughout the year.  “Besides the tarmac, now the airport also has a well-managed parking lot. Three years of investment and hard work has finally paid off,” said Tiwari. Total of Rs 90 million was spent for renovation.

A team of technicians from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation along with NAC had recently conducted a test flight on the runway.

Located at 11,1,45 feet above the sea level, the airport was running flights on dry seasons only before renovation.

Only narrow-bodied chartered aircrafts used to land at the airport besides the NAC´s twin-otters in the past as the runway could not support heavier planes.

“Now heavier planes are land there throughout the year,” Tiwari said, and went on to express confidence that the renovated runaway will certainly boom the tourism in the area.
