SC strikes down law allowing development in national parks

KATHMANDU, Jan 15: The Supreme Court (SC) has annulled an amendment to the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act that permitted development projects in protected areas, including national parks and wildlife reserves.


A Constitutional Bench of four justices, led by Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, ruled that the amendment violated the constitution. The provision was introduced as part of changes aimed at facilitating investment but was deemed unconstitutional.

Although Justice Hari Phuyal disagreed, asserting that the amendment was necessary, the majority of the bench ruled to quash it.
