By
KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the regulatory body for aviation sector, has canceled the Air Operation Certificate (AOC) of three airlines after they failed to renew their periodic license.

The AOCs of Cosmic Air, Yeti International and Impro Airways were automatically annulled on January 11 as per the CAAN Regulations. [break]

“The AOCs were annulled as these airline companies did not show any interest to renew their operating licenses,” Keshavraj Khanal, director general of CAAN, told myrepublica.com on Monday.

All these airlines had stopped operation at least a year ago, according to CAAN sources.

“They will need to pay double the required if they want to renew their AOCs,” Khanal said.

Yeti International used to operate international flights while Cosmic Air used to fly in both domestic and international sectors. Impro, which ceased operation two years ago, had MI-17 helicopter for domestic chartered flights. Yeti International, which ceased its operation in April, last year, was promoted by UAE-based Air Arabia and the group that operates Yeti Airlines, a domestic carrier.

According to CAAN provisions, the airlines must submit technical and safety audit for AOC renewals. “Since these airline companies have no aircraft for operation, there can´t be audits,” a senior official at CAAN said, adding, “It seems these companies are not interested in operating airline any more, given their lackluster attitude in renewing their operating license.”

According to CAAN sources, Cosmic Air has dues amounting to Rs 6.5 million and its Fokker aircraft has been grounded at Tribhuvan International Airport since 2006. International airline companies must furnish a fee of Rs 1 million for renewal of their operating license, while domestic carriers need to pay Rs 200,000 to Rs 400,000 - as per the weight of the aircraft.
