KATHMANDU, Jan 1: For the first time in Nepal, the National Public Health Laboratory has successfully conducted a genetic test for breast cancer. Gene sequencing, a genetic test that was previously unavailable in Nepal, is now being performed at the National Public Health Laboratory.

The laboratory can now test samples from across the country for genetic breast cancer testing, according to Ranjan Raj Bhatta, the laboratory's chief.

"This test has been made possible for the first time," Bhatta said, "Now, there is no need to send samples abroad."

Previously, testing for genetic links to breast cancer required sending samples to India and other countries. This test helps determine if an individual and their family may have a genetic predisposition to breast cancer. Doctors believe early detection can allow for treatment that may protect the family from developing the disease.

Bhatta said that sending samples abroad often took more time and incurred higher costs. Now, the laboratory will conduct these tests using blood and tissue samples. Additionally, the laboratory plans to regularly add four other types of cancer-related tests to its services.

In India, genetic breast cancer tests can cost up to Rs 60,000 and take more time due to the need for international shipping. However, the National Public Health Laboratory will conduct the tests for Rs 30,000.

Each year, approximately 2,000 people in Nepal undergo genetic testing for breast cancer. This change will save around Rs 120 million by eliminating the need for overseas testing.

Health Minister Pradip Paudel had previously decided to begin cancer-related tests in the laboratory, which were not possible in government cancer hospitals. These tests are now being regularly conducted at the National Public Health Laboratory.
