A web portal to help students make informed academic choices

By
KATHMANDU, June 29: Merocampus.com is the one stop information portal on the right choice of subject and college for a student. Set up in 2012, the website functions with the objective of providing students with academic information so that they can make an informed choice.

According to Prabin Paudel, founder of merocampus.com, students prefer looking over courses and colleges on the internet or even discussing it with friends rather than talking it over with their parents. “Since students spend a lot of time online, we wanted to provide a platform where they can find all the information they need when selecting a college and a course,” he says.[break]

Students going through the website will find different courses and the available colleges for the course. Information on various colleges is also provided on the website. “We speak to colleges and gather information that we put on the site for the students,” explains Paudel.

The website doesn’t just give students an array of courses and colleges to decide upon. It also provides information on academic news and events and available internships. The internship culture in Nepal is yet to gain as much popularity as it has in other countries, says Paudel. These internships are especially targeted to fresh graduates and students.

Another interesting aspect on the website is the information on scholarships for students who are looking forward to study abroad. “We’ve made sure that the scholarships we put up are ones that Nepali students are eligible for,” says Paudel.

There are 20,000 registered users of the website and it also gets 2000 visitors per day. The registered users get emails that correspond with the type of course and college that they are looking for.

Next year, the website is planning to include government colleges and the courses they offer. Paudel shares, “Many young people come from all over the country to study in government colleges in the capital. Internet is accessible, and we want to be able to give these students the right information. Also, many government colleges do not have websites and the students have to rely on other sources for information.”

New courses are being introduced every year in Nepal, but there is not much awareness regarding them, opines Paudel. The website remains updated so that the students are not missing out on anything.
