KATHMANDU, June 8: The locals of Banchare Danda have created obstructions in the dumping of garbage at the landfill site today as well. The locals were agitated and had protested the dumping of garbage at Banchare Danda on Tuesday as well.
Police were also mobilized on Tuesday to assist in the garbage dumping process and stop the locals from creating obstructions. Stating that an agreement has not been made with the locals and that their demands have not been fulfilled, the locals have started obstructing the dumping trucks.
Locals obstruct dumping of garbage in Banchare Danda
Garbage collection has been delayed for over two weeks from the streets of Kathmandu, resulting in heaps of garbage piled up everywhere in the capital. The garbage dumped on the city streets has also started to rot, directly affecting the general public. Doctors have warned that health problems can occur at any time.
Minister for Urban Development, Ram Kumari Jhakri, Mayor of Kathmandu Balen Shah, Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, Deputy Mayor of Lalitpur Manjali Shakya and chairpersons and mayors and officials of the rural municipalities and municipalities concerned were present at a meeting held on Monday night.
According to the agreement reached, the garbage should be covered with soil up to 15 cm high after dumping, biological treatment method should be implemented within 10 days on the recommendation of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology to remove odor, garbage collection should be classified, land acquisition process should be started, construction of five local roads should be completed within a year, local river control, temple and community building should be constructed and tree planting should be initiated.
