Collection of garbage in Kathmandu to halt from tomorrow
KATHMANDU, July 18: The locals of Banchare Danda obstructed the dumping of garbage at the landfill site on Tuesday as well. According to the Solid Waste Management Association of Nepal (SWMAN), none of the vehicles carrying garbage from Kathmandu metropolis were able to reach the landfill site due to the obstruction by the locals.
The residents of Banchare Danda and Sisdol had stopped the vehicles carrying garbage underway to the landfill site since Monday, the day the new fiscal year started, saying that the agreements made in the past had not been implemented.
Locals obstruct dumping of garbage in Banchare Danda
After the residents of Banchare Danda and Sisdol obstructed the disposal of garbage, SWMAN registered a writ petition in the court.
Despite the Supreme Court's interim order prohibiting the local level from collecting fees from tippers heading to dispose of waste in Banchare Danda and blocking them for non-payment, the locals disregarded the order and continued to block vehicles carrying garbage.
According to SWMAN, on Monday, 30 vehicles carrying waste returned from mid-way while going to the landfill site. However, on Tuesday, the vehicles carrying garbage did not leave Kathmandu. According to the metropolis, about 380 trucks carrying garbage from Kathmandu Valley are sent to Banchare Danda every day.
SWMAN said that the garbage of Kathmandu will not be picked up from Wednesday due to the obstruction of the residents of Banchare Danda and Sisdol.
According to Mitra Ghimire, general secretary of SWMAN, the garbage accumulated from Monday and Tuesday has been kept in Teku transfer station and vehicles. Because of this, there will be a problem in collecting garbage from Wednesday.
