The arrested has been identified as Arjun Bhatta a.k.a Dinesh, 29, of Bungkot VDC-3, Gorkha. The accused would pose as an employee with reputed international organizations like UNDP, DFID, USAID, US Embassy and Armed Police Force among others and ask for laptop samples for bulk purchase deal. Once he was handed a sample laptop, he would ask the unsuspecting businessmen to get photocopies of their identity cards and invoice for the laptops while he would flee with the laptops.
Bhatta admitted that he managed to steal 42 laptops from various businessmen through fraudulent means.
Preliminary police investigation has found Bhatta has victimized 18 businessmen in Kathmandu.
Interestingly, Bhatta is found to have used fake number plates belonging to diplomatic missions and international organizations in his car for the purpose. "His way of dealing would easily make people believe that he actually worked for such organizations," police investigation officer Krishna Koirala said.
Bhatta would use different mobile phone SIM cards for the dealings and destroy them upon completion of the mission. He is found to have used six SIM cards belonging to Spice Nepal Pvt Ltd.
Police have seized a Toyota SE Limited car, LCD monitor, P4 CPU, Apex Keyboard, an HP laptop, a IBM laptop, two HCL laptops, three Lenovo laptops and fake number plates.
Bhatta is found to have sold those laptops through Nawa Raj Adhikari, the operator of N and N Computer at Dillbazar and also to buyers through classified ads published in various newspapers.
