JHAPA, Nov 8: Two separate fire incidents occurred in Jhapa district recently, causing significant damage to property.
On November 7, 2024, at around 8:30 pm, a fire broke out at the residence of Shiva Lal Gautam in Pyakurel Chowk, Ward 8, Birtamod Municipality. The fire started from a room with cement walls and a tin roof, quickly spreading to the kitchen. Two gas cylinders exploded, and a gas stove, kitchenware, grains, one scooter, and part of the southern veranda of the house were all severely damaged. The estimated loss from the fire is around Rs 1 million.

During the firefighting efforts, Mohan Timilsina, a local resident, suffered minor burns on his hands, feet, cheeks, and back. He was treated at a nearby medical facility and later discharged. The fire was controlled by 9:00 PM with the help of a police team, local residents, and Birtamod Municipality’s fire truck. An investigation is ongoing.
On November 8, at around 1:30 AM, another fire erupted in the kitchen of Hemram’s house in Lalmohar, Simlwadi, Ward No. 3, Jhapa Municipality. The fire started from the stove and spread to the roof made of tin sheets and jute, causing complete destruction of the house, which had bamboo and cement walls.
The fire caused damages worth about Rs 90,000, including Rs 10,000 in cash, 10 chickens, tin sheets, eight mounds of paddy, three sacks of rice, clothes, utensils, and other personal items. The fire was brought under control by 2:00 AM with the help of police and locals. No casualties or livestock losses were reported. Further investigations are underway.
