The amounted collected during the last fiscal year is 323 percent highter than in the fiscal year 2010/2011 when the revenue was just Rs. 49.55 million.[break]
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) at MTPD Pawan Giri, said reason for the sharp rise was due to campaign against drunk driving. Additionally, traffic police have stepped up strong check for use of seat-belts, use of overhead bridge by pedestrians and lane violation.
According to MTPD. there were a total of 727,247 cases of traffic rule violations.
The campaign that begun since last March provided only Rs 674 to every traffic police as a reward for three months according to the traffic police record. “We have collected a lot from the people but in return we get very less,” said a traffic police, preferring anonymity. He suspected that top police officials must have made some irregularities of the money hard-earned by them.
Following different complaints filed against financial irregularities, Police headquarter formed a probe panel, which couldn´t find substantial evidences.
DSP Giri said, “Of the collected revenue, only 15 percent is rewarded to the police whereas 10 percent goes to the centrally-run Welfare Fund. The welfare fund will be used to upgrade the condition of the traffic police and to raise public awareness. Traffic police claims it still lacks proper equipments and enough manpower.
In the last fiscal year they were able to fine 640 school buses for carrying more students than their capacity. Traffic police charge Rs 200 -1,000 from vehicles violating traffic rules.
