By
KATHMANDU, May 1: With the summer on its way and the temperature of Kathmandu rising, many people find different ways of dealing with the heat.

People venture outside with a layer of sunscreen, with short t-shirts and shorts and a deodorant in the bag. Summer can be quite difficult without food that can help keep your body hydrated and cool. [break]

Ice-creams are an age old summer food but a rising alternative flooding the streets are shaved ice or golas as they are popularly known in this part of the world. But are they as popular as we make them out to be?

“When I see ice-creams I feel cool but golas just make me feel irritated,” says Shesh Man Dahal,22, a student undergoing Chartered Accountancy training, adding, “ Since everything has a impression on the first sight but I still prefer ice-cream to golas.”

Although ice-creams maybe a safe choice for many, golas Flavored shaved ice have also made their mark as a summer street-food because of its unique taste and cleverly thought of point of sales.

Supporting this claim, 24 year-old Arjun Magar, Masters of Arts graduate from Ratna Rajya College says, “I’d go for shaved ice because it offers a new taste and I can find them in many different flavors. It helps in keeping us cool during times of summer and the prices are also very reasonable and of course, it’s very delicious and mouth watering.”

However, hygiene also plays a big part in the foods young people choose to consume, especially in summer.

Shaved ice tend to be seen as a little less hygienic because of how its made on the streets and many shaved ice vendors tend to disregard hygiene ethics when it comes to the water used to make the ice.

“Ice creams are made in a more hygienic condition and they are available in variety of attractive packaging,” says Sara Gurung Shrestha on our Facebook page. “Golas are made of artificial chemicals and found on the streets. From a health point of view I don’t want to take risks, so I would always go for ice-creams,” she adds.

Shaved ice or ice-creams, whatever the summer food you prefer, both seem to have their own loyalist. Some young prefer shaved ice for their unique local taste where as others, less adventurous ones, prefer ice-creams.

On a day out though, people need a hydrating food to keep fluid levels under control so whatever your choice, eating one of these summer foods always helps.
