KATHMANDU, June 4: An massive fire broke out in the godown of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) at Ratnapark on Thursday afternoon. Seven fire engines from Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur fire brigades and those of Nepal Police and Nepal Army reached the site and brought the fire under control within an hour and a half, according to the NEA.

A serious disaster was averted as we were able to douse the fire before it was too late, said Kathmandu Fire Brigade Chief Kishor Kumar Bhattarai. The NEA's offices stretch from old Bus Park to Bag Bazaar so the fire could have spread to nearby settlements and businesses had it not been brought control on time, said Bhattarai. An investigation is underway so as to ascertain what caused the fire. "The ware house was damaged in the earthquake was being repaired, so we suspect electrical short circuit," said Bhattarai.
