SPORTS BRIEFS: Deepak Maharjan defeated

KATHMANDU, Dec 26: Nepal´s medal hope from pugilist Deepak Maharjan received a big blow on Monday in the Second Benazir Bhutto Memorial International Boxing Tournament being held in Pakistan.



The star Nepali boxer Maharjan was defeated by Pakistan player Nashir Khan. In the first bout of the tournament, the only Guangzhou Asain Games bronze medalist for Nepal was defeated 25-17. [break]



Maharjan was back in the first and second round of the bout 11-5, 8-6 and played a 6-6 draw in the last round. Among seven Nepali boxers competing in Pakistan, six of them were defeated in the very first bout. Ratna Tamang is the only player to win the opening bout confirming at least a bronze for Nepal.



Tamang will meet Pakistani player in the semifinal on Tuesday.



Bijeshwari, AVM win team titles

KATHMANDU: Bijeshwari and AVM won the girls´ and boys´ team events titles respectively on Monday in the Cambridge Cup First Valley-wide Inter-school Table Tennis Tournament held in the capital. In the girls´ final, Bijewhwari eased past Neologian 3-1 and in boys´ final AVM beat Everest with identical score.



Bijeshwari´s Iva Raut took home gold in U-12 girl´s singles final defeating Priyanka Shakya of her own school. In U-10 girl´s title clash, Bhumika Thapa of DAV saw off her schoolmate Priyanka Shakya. Similarly, girls doubles title went to Sanu Thapa and Rubi Basukala of Neologian who claimed title defeating Erika Maharjan and Norden Tamang´s pair of Bijeshwari.


U2, Lumbini triumph

KATHMANDU: U2 and Lumbini International College won their respective matches Monday in the Third BST Cup Inter-college Boy´s Basketball being held in the capital. U2 edged past Redhon College 38-25 while Lumbini thrashed Canvas 59-18. Sanchok Gurung contributed highest 24 points in Lumbini´s victory.



In other matches played at host BST College´s court, Golden Gate, Bagmati, Modern College, National Campus and Nobel Academy registered wins. Golden Gate saw off BST 80-66, Bagmati overcame New Summit 97-68, National edged past Nawa Jiwan 65-59 and Nobel had a narrow 33-29 win over Lincoln.


Belmonte Fighters beats JVD XI

KATHMANDU: Belmonte Fighters defeated JVD XI by 84 runs on Monday in the Riddhi Siddhi Marwadi T-20 Cricket Tournament. Belmonte Fighters elected to bat first in the match held at the Modern Indian School Ground, Chobhar and put up 156 runs in 20 overs losing five wickets. Vivek Maskara scored 38 runs while Md Shahid Khan and Neeraj Agrawal contributed 26 runs each. Dipankar Yonjan claimed three wickets for JVD XI.



Chasing the total, JVD XI was all out for 72 runs in 14 overs. Shailendra Sharma (17 runs) was the highest scorer for JVD XI. Pramod Singh, Anil Maharjan and Neeraj Agrawal took two wickets each for Belmonte Fighters.
