KATHMANDU, Jan 22: Nepal School Sports Federation (NSSF) and the Faculty of Education at Kathmandu University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop a comprehensive sports curriculum.
The agreement was signed by NSSF President Binod Shrestha and Kathmandu University Dean Prof. Dr. Bal Chandra Luitel in a bid to enhance the quality of school-level sports and physical education in Nepal.
The MoU underscores NSSF’s strong commitment and leadership in developing a safeguarded, evidence-based sports curriculum aligned with national needs. The collaboration is expected to strengthen school sports, physical education, and the holistic development of children across the country.
Bhaktapur introduces local curriculum
Under the agreement, NSSF will play a lead role in identifying curriculum needs, defining priority areas, facilitating access to schools and key stakeholders, and coordinating the implementation and pilot testing of developed curricula. NSSF will also provide technical inputs grounded in national school sports practices and promote approved curricula through its nationwide network. Curriculum development will focus on key areas of sports education.
Kathmandu University’s Faculty of Education will contribute academic and technical expertise in areas including school sports and physical education, fundamentals of sports science and coaching, school-level sports management and leadership, child development through sports, health, fitness, and overall well-being education. The Faculty will also support research-based content development, ensure academic quality, and align curricula with Nepal’s national education framework and international best practices.
The MoU further includes provisions for capacity-building programs for teachers, trainers, and coaches, along with academic counseling, expert reviews, research, monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment in sports education.
To ensure effective implementation, a joint coordination committee comprising representatives from both institutions will be formed to oversee planning, execution, monitoring, and periodic review.
Speaking at the event, NSSF President Binod Shrestha emphasized that curriculum development is the cornerstone of making school sports sustainable, high-quality, and results-oriented. He expressed confidence that the partnership would make a meaningful contribution to the long-term advancement of sports education in Nepal.
Valid for five years, the MoU is being viewed as a milestone initiative toward institutional collaboration, academic excellence, and the development of sports education in line with national priorities.
The signing ceremony was attended by Rajkumar Karki, General Secretary of NSSF and an Executive Member of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), among others.
