Special Court asks district courts to summon 'absconding' gangsters

By
KATHMANDU, May 21: The Special Court on Tuesday asked concerned district courts to summon five notorious gangsters, who have been chargesheeted for amassing illegal properties, within 15 days.

According to the Special Court Registrar Dhir Bahadur Chand, the five absconding gangsters would be called on by the concerned district courts to present themselves before the Special Court with the given time. He said, “We have written to the district courts of Morang and Kathmandu about the case and asked them to summon the gangsters within the date.” District Court Morang will send the notice to Parshuram Basnet and other four will be notified by the Kathmandu District Court, according to him.

Following CIB police investigation, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DoMLI) on Sunday had filed cases against five notorious gangsters at the Special Court for the illegal gathering of properties equivalent to Rs 633 million through extortions, illegal contracts and banking transactions, among other illegal activities. Those absconding are Ganesh Lama, Dipak Manange aka Rajib Gurung, Parshuram Basnet aka Krishna Basnet, Chakre Milan aka Milan Gurung and Abhishek Giri.

After investigation officers of the DoMLI failed to present the charge sheet and the absconding accused to the Special Court claiming that the accused were on the run, the process of bringing them to the court to face trial is certain to take longer. Had the DoMLI officers presented the accused gangsters alongwith the charge sheet, the court would have begun the legal debate keeping them in the judicial custody, a source at the SC said.

Lama´s wife Laxmi Lama, his father Pasang Lama and mother Ranju Lama have also been made defendants in the case. Similarly, Manange´s wife Pasang Dolma Gurung, Basnet´s wife Anju Singh Basnet, Milan´s wife Indira Ghale Gurung and Giri´s wife Anisha Giri have also been made defendants.

According to the police sources, there has been serious debate and controversies within the police institutions about the way DoMLI filed the case. While DoMLI claimed that they were absconding, the four of them were moving freely within the country and one had been serving a jail term in the central jail.
