'Education sector must be kept aloof of politics'

BIRATNAGAR, April 17: Minister for Education, Girirajmani Pokharel,  on Sunday stressed the need for the implementation of the educational rights enshrined in the new constitution.

Speaking to journalists at Biratnagar airport, Minister Pokharel said the education sector must be purged off politics, and that teachers must remain active in imparting lessons to students inside the classrooms.He said the Eighth Amendment of the Education Bill was in final stages and it would be discussed after the parliamentary session starts. The distribution of school text books will continue from today onwards till April 27, Minister Pokharel said while noting acts of some schools in the past of distributing older books and submitting bills for the new ones. He warned of taking action against schools indulging in such acts.

Minister Pokharel assured that school textbooks will be available in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and other places by April 27. The printing of the textbooks was delayed due to shortage of paper, the Minister clarified.

When a journalist informed of students at private schools having to cough up higher prices for the textbooks, Minister Pokharel said private schools could hike the price only with the consent of two-thirds of parents. He further pledged to launch a probe into the complaints of exorbitant prices of textbooks. RSS
