JAJARKOT, Jan 29: It has already been four months since Ganesh Chadara, his family from Gorkha-3, started living as squatters in Khalanga, the district headquarters of Jajarkot.

They were married last October and were forced to leave the house after Ganesh's relatives did not accept them due to the inter-caste marriage. "Villagers attempted to attack us and also threatened to take our lives. Hence, we are forced to live as squatters despite having a house," said the victim Ganesh. He along with his newly-wed wife Jyoti Shah, father Kamaro Chadara, sister Yamuna, brother Rajesh, sister-in-law Kalpana and nephew Nischal.

"We are not safe in the village. We have received threats from villagers and before running from there, attempts were made to attack us. My daughter, daughter-in-law and son have not been able to go to school and study," said Kamaro. "The government, political parties, human right activists, and media persons should help us live in a secure environment," he said.

Ganesh's brother Rajesh, who is also a principal of local Masta Primary School, said he has not visited his school for four months due to threats. "I have received threats from locals and therefore cannot go to school for attending my duties. Concerned authorities and stakeholders should notice our plight and take necessary actions for easing our living," he added.

Bir Bahadur Rawat, a local, said the whole village is against the Chadara family due to the inter-caste marriage. DSP Dan Bahadur Malla, chief of District Police Office Jajarkot, informed that the family has been given protection by police after high possibilities of attacks. "We are taking initiative to gather everyone and try to resolve the dispute," informed DSP Malla.
