A meeting of the former lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties held at NC parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar Friday morning asked the UML Standing Committee to keep all options including CA revival open for ending the political logjam.[break]
The request of the former lawmakers lobbying for CA revival comes in the wake of the UML Standing Committee deciding on Wednesday to go for fresh parliamentary election, while ruling out the possibility of CA revival.
A press statement issued after the meeting states that their attention was seriously drawn toward the UML´s decision to rule out the option of CA revival. The lawmakers in the statement have maintained that CA revival after settling the contentious issues including federalism is the best available option for ending the impasse.
"This is the time to search for resolution to the problem through national consensus. It is necessary to find a constitutional solution as per the Interim Constitution of Nepal 2063 BS...," said the statement.
"We urge the standing committee of the UML to keep all options open, reconsidering seriously its previous decision. We are optimistic that the UML Central Committee would take a positive decision, taking the issue seriously," the statement further said.
Former lawmaker of Nepali Congress (NC) Shobhakar Budhathoki, who is among the key proponents of CA revival said over two-thirds former CA members want the CA revived. "Around 150 former lawmakers from different parties including those from the ruling parties were present in our last meeting," he said.
The demand of the former lawmakers with the UML Standing Committee to reconsider its position comes in the wake of another opposition party, Nepali Congress, preparing to make a similar decision in the upcoming CWC meeting.
