KATHMANDU, Jan 25: Bangladesh has been knocked out of the ICC T20 World Cup. The ICC has included Scotland in place of Bangladesh.

Despite a 24-hour deadline given by the ICC on Thursday, the Bangladesh government refused to allow the team to play in India. Following this refusal, the ICC moved ahead with the replacement.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board had filed a complaint with the Dispute Resolution Committee against the ICC’s decision to host matches in India. The complaint was rejected.

The dispute began after Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was excluded from the IPL. After that, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said it was unsafe to send the team to India and declined to participate.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India pushed for Mustafizur’s exclusion from the IPL in protest against the killing of Hindus in Bangladesh. The BCB strongly objected to the move. Political parties in Bangladesh then turned Mustafizur’s exclusion into a major issue. Soon after, the Bangladeshi government banned IPL broadcasts in the country, and the BCB took a firm stand against playing the World Cup in India.

Bangladesh had hoped that the Pakistan Cricket Board would also boycott the World Cup in support. The PCB backed Bangladesh during the ICC meeting but chose not to withdraw from the tournament.

Scotland is ranked 14th in the ICC T20 rankings and had a strong showing in the previous World Cup. In the 2021 edition, Scotland had defeated Bangladesh. Based on that performance, Scotland was given the spot.

Scotland will now compete in Group C, which includes West Indies, Italy, England, and Nepal. Scotland will play its first three matches in Kolkata, with the final group match scheduled in Mumbai.
