KATHMANDU, Jan 24: A faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba has begun preparations to hold a national convention ahead of the March 5 House of Representatives elections.
The faction, which was sidelined following the party’s recent Special General Convention led by President Gagan Thapa, plans to convene the gathering after the completion of the National Assembly elections scheduled for January 25.

For this purpose, former acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka, a Deuba loyalist, is holding consultations with leaders of the faction. A former central committee member who met Khadka on Saturday said the group has formally moved forward with preparations for the convention.
According to the leader, the proposed gathering aims to brief party leaders and cadres on internal political developments since the Election Commission validated the January 11–14 Special General Convention. The faction had sought to nullify the convention at the Supreme Court, but the court declined to issue a stay order on their writ petition challenging the Thapa-led party leadership.
