Speaking at a press conference held at Tribhuvan International Airport late Wednesday evening after returning to Kathmandu at the end of his six-day state visit to India, Prime Minister Oli said that his visit has been successful as he was able to clarify all the misunderstandings persisting between Nepal and India for some time regarding the constitution.
"Nepal-India relations had become chilly for some time. After my visit, I believe that the relations have returned to their previous condition and will not sour again from now onward," he said. "I have to say my visit to India has been completely successful."
He said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top India leaders hailed the new constitution as a significant achievement in the democratic history of Nepal and welcomed it.
"Indian Prime Minister Modi not only welcomed the new constitution but also congratulated Nepal's political savvy in drafting the statute through a democratic process," he claimed.
Oli has returned home without the two countries issuing a customary joint statement.
During his visit, he said he informed the Indian leadership and intellectual circles about all the democratic provisions included in the constitution, which was promulgated through a democratic process from the Constituent Assembly. This was as per the aim of his visit to clarify all kinds of unnecessary misunderstandings that had surfaced between the two countries.
He said that his visit had become urgent to restore the historical Nepal-India relations to their original state and start on a new course, which will be for the welfare of the two countries. "As per this need, I visited India and the visit has turned out to be important for both the countries," added he.
He said that all the dissatisfactions regarding the new constitution will be addressed through dialogue. "Keeping that in view, we formed a 11-member political committee to settle disputes over provincial demarcations before my visit. Now, we will give full shape to the committee and resolve all kinds of dissatisfactions through dialogue," said he.
He also said that he exchanged letters with India to simplify transit rights with other countries, especially Bangladesh.
During his visit to India, Prime Minister Oli also met Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, Indian Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Home Minister Raj Nath Singh, among others.
