The artists are finally coming out of their dens.

On August 7, the premises of DECC at United World Trade Center of Tripureswhor will see the participation of 32 Nepali tattoo artists at the National Tattoo Convention, 2010. They will come together to share their common fervor for art.

Conceived by the popular tattoo artist Mohan Gurung and a tattoo admirer Bijay Shrestha, the convention is the first of its kind for the country. “It’s a dream project of Mohan’s,” shares Shrestha.[break]

Supported by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Shrestha informs that the national convention is a precursor to the International Tattoo Convention, which is going to take place in Nepal Tourism Year 2011.

The event is set to raise social consciousness of tattooing as a form of art through interactions between visitors and the artists, stated the organizers.

Apart from also being a platform for exchanging ideas among tattooists, the organizers are using the event to generate awareness amongst the local tattooists about international safety and hygiene standards. Tattooist Prahlad Shrestha of Tik’e Jhya of Basantpur adds it is the first step to breaking the prevailing negative perception of tattooing and the artists.

Dominated by the Valley’s tattooists and studios, the event will also have four participants from Pokhara and one female tattoo artist, 19-year-old Sabita Maharjan of Tik’e Jhya.

The event will also have tattoo shows, freehand paintings by artists, tattoo and piercing accessories on display, along with musical performances by metal bands like Alt f4, 72 Hours, Lost, and E.QUALS teaming up with Kutumba. B. Boying is also on the schedule of the event.
