KATHMANDU, Sept 11: Tribhuvan University (TU) has initiated the appointment process for various vacant positions, establishing specific criteria to prevent political interference. Professors at TU believe these appointments could mark a positive change if officials perform their duties responsibly.

TU recently published the Regulations for Appointments to Periodic Positions, 2081 (2024), which will guide appointments to key positions such as deans, executive directors of research centers, program coordinators, department heads, campus chiefs, and examination controllers.

There are currently five vacancies for deans, one for an executive director, four for department heads, 11 for campus chiefs, one for examination controller, and four for assistant examination controllers. Separate committees have been formed to oversee the selection process.

Former Head of the Sociology Department, Yubraj Luitel, acknowledged the positive step TU has taken by setting criteria for appointments but emphasized the importance of accountability. "Political interference in appointments can be prevented if TU follows its own criteria," Luitel stated.

Vacancies for program coordinators in the departments of international relations, conflict and peace studies, gender studies, and social work have also been announced. TU is currently seeking applications for deans in the institutes of medicine, engineering, agriculture, and the faculties of humanities and education. Upcoming vacancies in the Faculty of Management and the Institute of Science and Technology are also expected to be filled by December.

Luitel noted that in the past, political pressure influenced appointments, contributing to the university's decline. He welcomed the introduction of clear criteria, though he stressed that effective implementation is key to removing political influence.

TU's newly established criteria include qualifications related to academic experience, doctoral degrees, research publications, leadership in research, and international collaborations. Education Director Khadga KC assured that the regulations would be fully enforced to ensure quality and uphold standards at TU.
