SPORTS BRIEFS: Kanchanpur clinch volleyball title

MAHENDRANAGAR, March 13: Kanchanpur on Sunday clinched the title of Prem Singh Dhami Memorial Regional Volleyball Tournament at Mahendranagar. Kanchanpur eased past Baitadi in straight sets during the title decider.



Kanchanpur registered 25-17, 26-24, 25-15 to bag a purse of Rs 31,000 while runners up Baitadi received Rs 21,000. [break]Dadheldura took the third place honors beating Achham. They were awarded with a cash prize of Rs 11,000. Gangadatta Awasthi of the winning side was declared the best player and best server. He received Rs 5,000. Altogether nine teams had participated in the tournament organized by Nepal Sports Federation.



APF victorious


JHAPA: Armed Police Force (APF) defeated Patna -XI by 11 runs on Sunday in the Fourth Binesh Verma Memorial One Day Cricket Tournament in Bhadrapur, Jhapa. Winning the toss APF opted to bat first and scored 156 runs losing all the wickets in 38.3 overs. Subash Khakurel was the highest scorer with 43 runs. Rajesh Singh and Rupal Lalla took three wickets each for Patna. Tight bowling from APF players helped them to restrict Patna-XI for 145 runs off 39 overs. Amrit Bhattarai and Parash Khadka grabbed three wickets each while Shakti Gauchan bagged two wickets. Rajesh Singh was the highest scorer with 58 runs for Patna.



Ice plays foul on riders


KATHMANDU: A couple of riders competing in the Fifth Yak Attack International Mountain Biking Series fell victims to frozen ice on their way to Manang from Chame on the seventh day of the race as defending champion Ajay Pandit Chhetri maintained the unchallenged lead with an overall advantage of 1 hour 11 minutes over second placed Padam Sabenhang whose overall timing is 18 hours 9 minutes 46 seconds. Greg McGoldrick, John Ferguson, John McGillivray, Kumar Gurung and Rajeev Rai all gave a busy time for the medic once everybody reached the base as they were taken by surprise by the remnants of the snowfall that occurred two weeks ago. As the route took to the swirling heights of about 3000m in the Himalayas, Pandit finished first for the seventh straight day with a timing of 2 hours 17 minutes 55 seconds.


Kavre into semis


KATHMANDU: Kavre District Football Association defeated Dolakha District Football Association 2-0 to reach the semifinals of the Fourth San Miguel Sindhu Bhote Koshi Cup Football Tournament on Sunday. Kavre´s Niraj Kusuju, who was later declared the man-of-the-match, scored the opener in 61 minutes. Lashi Narayan Shrestha added the second goal for the team in the extra time to confirm their place in the semifinals.



Dakshinkali win opener


KATHMANDU: Dakshinkali Sports Development Center won the inaugural match of the Martyrs Memorial C Division League qualifiers that kicked off Sunday at the ANFA ground, Satdobato. Roshan Shrestha scored twice for Dakshinkali as they beat Man-11 FC 3-0. Shrestha scored in the 11th and 36th minute while Bijay Lama added another one in the 60th minute. In another match, Bharada Maneshwori Club, Panauti, had a hard fought 1-0 win over Bal Mandir Club, Naxal. Sanjay Thapa scored the lone goal in the 22nd minute.


United Tanneries champions


KATHMANDU: United Tanneries defeated Model Global in the final of Corporate Beach Cricket held on Trishuli riverbanks at River Side Spring Resorts, Kurintar on Saturday. Winning the toss, Model scored 84 runs losing three wickets in regular five overs. Dinesh Barakoti scored not out 59 runs. United Tanneries reached the target in just 4.4 overs losing a wicket. Zeeshan Akhtar scored not out 39 runs for the winning team. Akhtar was adjudged the man-of-the-series while Prekshya Udas of the Himalayan Television received the award for the best female player of the tournament.
