SPORTS BRIEFS: Gyanubaba unbeaten in 7 matches

KATHMANDU, June 1: Defending champions Gyanubaba maintained their place at the top spot in the Fifth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament with a 25-8, 25-5, 25-10 demolition of Angels´ Heart on Tuesday.



Unbeaten Gyanubaba are now leading with 21 points from seven matches while Angel´s Heart have nine points. [break]



In the day´s other match, Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) struggled past Tops 25-23, 25-20, 24-26, 21-25, 15-9. Tops having played eight matches with four wins have 16 points while WMMC are trailing with 13 points. Earlier, Tops registered an easy 3-0 win over Angels´ Heart in the first match of the second round.



Meanwhile, the match between Fishtail and New Diamond was postponed due to poor light.



New Diamond have 16 points and Fishtail have 14 points. Deep Jyoti have withdrawn from the league, according to organizer Dhorpatan Volleyball Training Club.





APF support for Khadka´s treatment



KATHMANDU, June 1: Armed Police Force on Tuesday provided Rs 15,000 for the treatment of taekwondo player Ashok Khadka who sustained a serious injury to his foot during the Second International Taekwondo Championships held in Lucknow about one and a half years ago.



Earlier, taekwondo players Bima Rai, Padma Gurung and Bandana Shrestha had contributed Rs 22,135 while National Sports Council´s member Salim Miyan Ansari contributed Rs 5,000 to Nepal Taekwondo Association´s committee formed to raise funds for Khadka´s treatment.



Former taekwondo player Sangina Baidya said they have been seeking help from different sectors of society for his treatment.





Excelsior secures double victory



KATHMANDU, June 1: Excelsior School secured a double victory during the First Bagmati Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.



The senior boys´ team of Excelsior defeated Prithvi School 45-27 with the help of 17 points from Sunil Gurung while the senior girls´ team thrashed Mahendra Bhavan 19-9.



In other matches under the boys´ category, Kathmandu Valley, Trungram International Academy (TIA), and Unique and Nerik won their respective matches.



Likewise, South Point, TIA and hosts Bagmati Modern School won their respective matches in the senior girls´ category.
