SPORTS BRIEFS: Gyanubaba unchanged on top

KATHMANDU, June 2: Defending champions Gyanubaba of Pokhara remained on top of the table on Wednesday in the Fifth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament held at Machhepokhari, Kathmandu.



Continuing with their winning streak in the eighth match, Gyanubaba defeated Tops of Pokhara 25-11, 25-19, 25-16 to add 24 points in their account. Tops, with 17 points from nine matches with four victories are in fourth spot. [break]



Fishtail of Pokhara won both the matches of the day. They defeated New Diamond 18-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-15 and in another they eased past Angels Heart´25-12, 25-9, 25-13. Following the wins, they climbed to second position with 20 points from eight matches.





Int´l rating chess in Kanchanpur



KATHMANDU, June 2: Kanchanpur District Chess Association is set to organize the First Far-western International Rating Chess Tournament from June 14 to 19.



Players from four nations -- India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal -- have confirmed their participation while other nations are also invited to participate.



The tournament carries a total cash prize of Rs 170,000. The top 15 players will be awarded with cash prizes, and among them the top three players will get Rs 40,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000, respectively. Likewise, the best veteran, U-15 and U-20 players will be presented with cash prizes.



The organizers have expected participation of 130 players. The tournament is expected to cost Rs 600,000.





Greenland, Golden Peak win



KATHMANDU, June 2: Greenland and Golden Peak won their respective league matches on Wednesday in the Inter-school Basketball Tournament held at Bagmati Boarding School´s court at Sukedhara.



Under senior boys´ section, Greenland thrashed Gyan Kunja 34-8 riding on 14 points of Dipesh Karki. Golden Peak edged past Newton Children´s Academy 33-12 and Gyan Niketan saw off Himalayan 33-19. Rakesh Shrestha netted 17 points for Golden Peak and Sushanta Magar contributed 14 points for Gyan Niketan.



Likewise, Oasis and TIA also won their respective matches.



Under senior girls´ category, Mahendra Bhawan edged past Chandbag 19-4.
