SPORTS BRIEFS: Aaha Gold Cup begins on Tuesday

POKHARA, Jan 25: The eighth edition of the Aaha Gold Cup Football Tournament is kicking off on Tuesday at the Pokhara Stadium. The hosts Sahara Club organized a motorcycle rally on Monday for the publicity of the tournament.



The inaugural match will be held between the hosts Sahara and Rupandehi XI. [break]



Twelve teams are participating in the tournament that will end on February 6. Three departmental teams - Army, Police and Armed Police - along with NRT, Machhindra FC, Manang Marshyangdi Club, Jhapa´s Knight Chess, Rupandehi XI, Dehradun´s Gorkha United, Bangladesh´s Dhaka Sporting, Sahara UK, and hosts Sahara Club will compete for the title.





Avenues win Inter-television TT



KATHMANDU, Jan 25: Avishek Shakya and Deepa Adhikari of Avenues TV won the men´s and women´s singles titles of the Inter-television Table Tennis Tournament organized to mark the silver jubilee of Nepal Television on Monday.



Avishek defeated Manohari Thapa of Nepal TV 14-16, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7. Deepa defeated her colleague Manisha Gauchan 11-7, 11-3, 11-5.



Altogether, 36 players including 24 men and 12 women from eight television channels had participated in the two-day tournament.



Minister for Youth and Sports Ganesh Tiwari Nepali, among other officials, handed over the prizes to the players.
