Saajani Ghising from Alpine Public School stood first in the girls' category while Bhai Krishna Thami from Shree Sharba Higher Secondary School was the winner from the boys' category. The participating students began the race from the premises of the District Health Office in Charikot which was damaged by the recent earthquakes. The race ended at the power center of the district.
The 3.8 kilometer long race was held in order to raise awareness about the importance of restoring health facilities damaged by the April 25 earthquake. Almost 90% of the health facilities have been destroyed.
This race was part of Save the Children's international campaign 'EVERY ONE' that addresses the problem of child mortality.
After the conclusion of the race, the district stakeholders held a discussion on the status of health infrastructure and facilities in the district, plans for its reconstruction as well as how it all affects the mortality rate of children. The discussion ended with everyone committing to the reconstruction of the health facilities.
Ananda Pokharel, constituent assembly member from Dolakha, said, "We know the extent of the damage on health facilities in the district by the earthquake. Everyone, from the government to non government staff and civilians, should do whatever is in their power to start reconstructing it. We aim to make the health facilities functioning like before within six months."
This year, 'Race for Survival' has been held in 28 countries around the world. The race, which advocates protecting the lives of children through other children, was held in Kathmandu last year and saw the participation of 1,200 students.
