World Heart Day is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of September at the call of the World Heart Federation (WHF) and it will be observed on September 27 this year, celebrating workplace wellness with the theme ´Work with Heart´.
Heart diseases claim more than 15 million lives every year and is the number one cause of death globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 20 million people will die from cardiovascular diseases, mainly from heart disease and stroke, by 2015.
Cardiologists say heart diseases are largely preventable through a healthy diet, physical activity and other wise, lifestyle choices. “One can stay away from heart diseases by implementing preventive measures practically,” said senior cardiologist Dr Bhagawan Koirala.
“One has to put one´s heart in work and feel satisfied and comfortable with work” Dr Koirala said, elaborating on this year´s theme.
Consultant cardiologist at Norvic Dr Bharat Rawat suggested the nine golden rules of avoiding tobacco in any form, avoiding sugar and saturated fats and junk foods, eating a variety of foods including plenty of fruits and vegetables, moderate or no consumption of alcohol, physical activity, maintaining desirable weight, enjoying quality time with spouse, children, family and friends for mental relaxation, doing regular checkups for blood pressure, sugar and lipids, and enjoying every moment of life by laughing loudly.
Dr Rawat also warned about the adverse affects on the heart of unhealthy eating during the upcoming festival season and urged all to eat healthy.
Chief guest of the program Minister for Health and Population Umakant Chaudhary stressed raising awareness about preventive measures.
