NAWALPARASI, June 24: The first national general convention of the Tarai-Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) concluded on Thursday re-electing Mahantha Thakur as the party chairperson and other nine leaders for the party's top posts. The convention had kicked off Monday.
The leaders elected for the top body include Hridayesh Tripathi as senior vice-chairperson, Brikhesh Chandra Lal as vice-chairperson, Anita Kumari Yadav as treasurer and six members under the reservation quota.

Tripathi and Lal were elected senior vice-chairperson and vice-chairperson respectively after Bishwanath Prasad Yadav and Shankar Lal Chaudhary withdrew their nominations from the respective positions. Similarly, after Kavindranath Thakur and Indra Prasad Singh withdrew their nominations, Anita Kumari Yadav was elected as the treasurer, the party's election committee coordinator Nagendra Yadav said.
Thakur, who has remained party chairman since the party's inception nine years ago, was reelected to the post unanimously. Also, other nine leaders were elected unopposed.
TMDP's former spokesman Sarvendranath Shukla, who had nominated himself for a central member, had also withdrawn form the race while Tarai-Madhes Women Sangh's Chairperson Chanda Chaudhary also backed off from the race.
According to TMDP's election committee coordinator Yadav, the party's chairperson was given the responsibility to pick the leaders for the remaining posts, including general secretary and deputy general secretary. This convention was held after nine years.
