KATHMANDU, April 28: Lawmakers belonging to opposition parties condemned the government for its repression during the teachers' protest.
During the emergency session of the House of Representatives on Monday, they slammed the government for resorting to suppression instead of reaching an agreement with them.
Lawmaker Janardan Sharma of the CPN (Maoist Centre) condemned the government for suppressing teachers who were peacefully staging protests. He pointed out that the teachers were compelled to protest because a new law had not been enacted in line with the constitution.

Sharma emphasized that it was inappropriate for the government to resort to repression instead of addressing the legitimate demands of the teachers for the new law.
Similarly, Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sumana Shrestha opposed the state's repression against teachers and emphasized the need to immediately address the legitimate demands of the teachers. She stated that in a situation where children's right to education is being violated, the government must find an immediate solution.
Lawmakers also drew the government's attention to the need for arranging treatment for the injured. During the protest in the capital on Sunday, police clashed with teachers who were protesting for the implementation of the School Education Act, injuring 27 teachers and school staff.
The peaceful protest, which had been ongoing for 26 days, turned tense when the police used batons and water cannons.
