KATHMANDU, Aug 20: The chief minister (CM) of Lumbini Province, Chetnarayan Acharya, is scheduled to seek a vote of confidence today (Tuesday).

Acharya, who was appointed as the CM on July 22 with the support of the Nepali Congress (NC), will seek a vote of confidence at 1 PM on Tuesday during the 25th meeting of the fourth session of the Lumbini Province Assembly.

Acharya, who was the deputy leader of the CPN-UML parliamentary party at the time of his appointment as CM, was elected as the party leader only three days ago. After being selected as the party leader, he is now going to seek the vote of confidence under the constitutional provision, which requires taking a vote of confidence within 30 days of appointment.

Appointed as CM with the support of 56 provincial assembly members, including 27 from NC and 29 from UML, Acharya is expected to secure the vote of confidence.

The ruling NC and CPN-UML have issued whips directing their provincial assembly members to vote in favor of Acharya. Among the 11 political parties represented in the provincial assembly, CM Acharya is supported by 2 provincial assembly members from the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), one from JSP Nepal, and four from the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP).

In the Lumbini Provincial Assembly, 17 members are in the opposition, including 10 from CPN (Maoist Center), 4 from Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and one each from CPN (United Socialist), Rastriya Janamorcha, and an independent.

The support from 44 provincial members is needed to secure the necessary majority in the Lumbini Provincial Assembly, which has 87 members. It is reported that since the two ruling parties have a clear consensus, and even the smaller parties are in favor of the ruling party, Acharya is expected to win the vote of confidence easily.
