KATHMANDU, Sept 7: CPN (Maoist Center) leader Janardan Sharma has rejected the post of the party’s Deputy General Secretary.

Addressing a function organized by All Nepal National Independent Students Union (Revolutionary) in the capital on Wednesday, Sharma, who is also the finance minister, said he was addressing the function in the capacity of the party's organization department chief. He clarified that he was not addressing the function in the capacity of the Deputy General Secretary of the party.

The party’s two influential leaders — Barsha Man Pun and Sharma — were seen as strong contenders for the post of General Secretary. But as both Pun and Sharma were not ready to give up the post of General Secretary to each other, the party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal picked Dev Gurung as the party’s General Secretary.

In order to appease all aspirants for the post of party’s office bearers, Chairman Dahal had appointed six leaders to the post of Deputy General Secretary. Those appointed to the post included Pun, Sharma, Giriraj Mani Pokharel, Haribol Gajurel, Pampha Bhusal, Shakti Basnet and Matrika Yadav.

Party insiders said Sharma had put forth his different opinion on the appointment, expressing his strong dissatisfaction with the decision made by the party Chairman Dahal. Stating that there are a number of Deputy General Secretaries in the party, Sharma said, “I want to inform you that I am addressing you in my capacity as the Chief of the party's Organization Department,” Sharma said.
