Dikyi Ukyab's Silver Lining made public

By
KATHMANDU, Aug 9: A Nepali residing in New York and doing her undergraduate studies at SUNY Purchase in New York, Dikyi Ukyab released her first album “Silver Lining” on Sunday, August 7.

At a program organized in Kathmandu, senior comedian Madan Krishna Shrestha, singers Sukmit Gurung and Nima Rumba jointly launched the album.[break]

“The first and foremost prerequisite to be a singer is good voice, and Dikyi is blessed with that,” said composer Nyhoo Bajracharya, who provided the music in her album.

“She’s dedicated and I don’t see any reason why she wouldn’t get a good space in the Nepali music industry,” Bajracharya added.

The event was punctuated by Dikyi’s performance, which drew praises from the gathered audience.

“I’m amazed to see the finesse and clarity in Dikyi’s Nepali, the pronunciation is spot on,” said Madan Krishna Shrestha.

The 20-year-old singer revealed, “My focus was on getting the pronunciation right. Whatever language you choose, you ought to do justice to the pronunciation or you’ll kill the song. I believe it also determines a singer’s credibility and quality.”

“My mom is a poet and I became interested in poetry. I used to write poems. Then I started combining poetry and guitar,” Dikyi shared.

Dikyi was trained in classical music in the first semester, and she was also a member of the school choir and an a cappella group.

The singer will be leaving soon for the US, but promised to be back for concerts in the coming days.

“This album has encouraged me, so I’ll definitely continue singing,” said Dikyi.

“I’ve released a Nepali album, and I think I’ll come up with a Tibetan album, too,” added Dikyi.

Veteran lyricist Durga Lal Shrestha revealed that it was Dikyi’s singing that convinced him to write for her.

“Her singing prowess is truly remarkable and I’m happy to be a part of this venture,” he said.

Two years in the making, the album was recorded at the Do Re Mi Studio in Kathmandu.

There are eight songs in the album. Two of them are in English, and the rest are in Nepali.

“I’ve composed the lyrics of the two songs, Silver Lining and Demise,” said Dikyi, adding, “There’s a big variety in the songs in this album. There are slow rock and pop numbers. It also includes a folk song.”

Music videos for two of her tracks Jau and Ukali Orali were screened at the event, both directed by Araj Keshav.
