KATHMANDU, Nov 12: Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has accused the UCPN (Maoist) of intending to impose autocratic rule in the country and claimed that the agitation announced by the opposition parties against such plan would be successful.

He underlined the need of establishing lasting peace, ensuring political stability, and taking the country out of terror, threat and totalitarianism.

Speaking at a greetings-exchange programme and tea-reception organized by the Nepal Tamang Association Kathmandu Liaison Committee on the

occasion of the Deepawali Festival in the capital on Monday, Koirala said the Congress was and is always in favour of federalism and accused the UCPN (Maoist) of besmirching the Congress that it was against federalism.

All the people have become aware of their rights after the people´s movement and institutionalizing the achievements of the movement falls upon the shoulder of the Congress.

Also speaking on the occasion, party central member Gagan Thapa opined that the agitation was a must not for the Congress-led government but for guranteeing democracy and new election. However, the Prime Minister and the UCPN (Maoist) Chairman have not been serious towards this, he added.

He urged other political parties to be aware of the intention of UCPN (Maoist) of capturing state power.

NC Kathmandu district president Bhimsendas Pradhan said that federalism was established in Nepal with the then party President Girija Prasad Koirala signing its concept paper after the Madhesh movement.

Former CA member Tirthaman Dangol stressed the need of protecting democracy and added that the joint agitation announced by the opposition parties was intended for this.

Association Chairman Kapil Lama underlined the need of involving the ethnic groups in nation building instead of creating disputes among them. Association´s District President Bikram Lama presided over the programme.
