“All three SSPs who head the ZPOs will now be more active than before,” DIG Khatri said, adding, “The SSP offices will now directly investigate major cases of crime.” [break]
After they were stripped of their responsibility of issuing driving licenses nearly a decade ago, the ZPOs have been only been overseeing district and area police offices. With the new work plan in place, the ZPOs are expected to play a key role in solving serious cases.
At a press conference in Biratnagar on Tuesday, DIG Khatri said that the new work plan focuses on evidence-based investigation of crimes. “Nabbing criminals, beating and interrogating them in custody and producing them in the court alone are not investigations,” Khatri said. “We will now focus on evidence-based investigations.”
DIG Khatri said that the SSP offices will immensely contribute to collecting evidences. “The contributions of the SSP offices will help District Police Offices (DPOs),” he said. DIG Khatri´s first press conference as the chief of the Eastern Region Police Office was attended by the ZPO heads of all three zones --Sagarmatha, Koshi and Mechi - in the region.
DIG Khatri, who had earlier served as inspector in Lahan, as DSP in Sunsari and as SSP in Dharan, claimed that he better knows the situation of the eastern region. He pointed out smuggling, organized crime, small arms, drug peddling, armed outfits´ activities and domestic violence as the main challenges facing the police in the eastern region.
