NUWAKOT, May 27: Normalcy is slowly returning in Nuwakot more than a month after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal on April 25.

Although the quake destroyed most houses and displaced countless people in the district, locals are trying to return to their normal lives despite frequent small aftershocks. With markets open, people were again seen engaging in trade and other activities.

"There is no point in staying idle. We need to unite and carry out developmental works in the district," said Bahadur Singh Tamang, a Nepali Congress constituent assembly member of Nuwakot-3.Unlike in the previous weeks, the quake-affected locals have returned to work as the pressure to earn their livelihood mount. Many could be seen erecting makeshift tents and cottages.

People have begun to live in the houses that have been marked safe by the government's technical teams.

"How many days should we spend just staring at the debris of collapsed houses? Monsoon is arriving and we need to build makeshift houses at the earliest," said Pratap Singh Tamang, a local of Fikuri-1. "Instead of waiting for the government to do something, we need to do everything we can."

Locals keep themselves busy as soon as they wake up. A large crowd of people can be seen in Trishuli Bazaar to buy necessary equipments for building makeshift houses. Shops and hotels have reopened and are usually filled with customers.

"People have realized that crying over the losses is fruitless. At least we can tend to our fields and grow crops for future. We need to earn our living ourselves," Sanu Maya Tamang, a local of Fikuri-1.

According to the latest data provided by the District Development Committee and District Administration Office of Nuwakot, the district is the third most affected in terms of human causalities and physical damages. So far, 1,061 people have been reported killed and more than 1,700 injured. Farmers have incurred losses amounting to more than one million rupees.
