KATHMANDU, Jan 16: Election Commission (EC) has officially recognized Gagan Thapa as the President of the Nepali Congress (NC), updating party records under Section 51 of the Political Parties Act.
Thapa was elected President of NC during the Special General Convention held in Kathmandu from January 11–14. Following the Special General Convention, Thapa and other newly elected office-bearers submitted a formal request to the EC on Thursday to update the party’s official records.
NC’s Shekhar-Gagan faction demands four ministers
Leaders of the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction had also submitted a claim to the EC on Friday morning, asserting their legitimacy. The EC subsequently summoned the newly-elected leaders for verification.
After reviewing claims from both factions, EC granted official recognition to the Gagan Thapa-led faction. With this approval, Thapa faction will now officially hold the party’s election symbol, the tree as well as the flag with four starts and the Sanepa party office.
