KATHMANDU, Jan 17: Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shrestha of the Nepali Army is scheduled to depart for the mission on Saturday (January 17) after being appointed as the Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
According to a statement issued by the Nepali Army, Lt Gen Shrestha was appointed to the post by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on December 2, 2025. The appointment marks the first time the Nepali Army has been assigned the position of Force Commander in the UNISFA mission, the statement said.

Previously, since 1993, seven high ranking officers of the Nepali Army have successfully served as Force Commanders in five different United Nations peacekeeping missions.
The Nepali Army said that such leadership roles in UN peace missions help enhance Nepal’s image and reputation in the international arena.
