With people in the region divided for and against various key provisions of the constitution, the government has decided to launch the awareness campaign, billed as Janata ko Sambidhan, Janata, to familiarize the public with the new constitution from December 7 to January 5 across the country.
The people in the government also claim that various groups are active in misleading the commoners about the new statute.
The Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD), the authority responsible to implement the campaign, is not sure if the local authorities will be able to carry out the campaign in the eight districts as continuous protests create a hostile environment for government bodies to carry out any activities.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to formally flag off the campaign amid a special ceremony scheduled to be held at Rastriya Sabha Griha in the capital on December 7.
Dr Hari Poudel, joint secretary of the MoFALD and coordinator for the campaign, said that the ministry is launching the campaign in all the 75 districts headquarters, municipalities and village development committees.
“We have directed the local bodies in the districts to make necessary preparations for carrying out the campaign. But it is really very challenging in the face of protests,” said Poudel.
He said the ministry has already prepared materials to be disseminated during the campaign in local languages to make it easy for the general public to understand the new constitution in their own languages.
He said that all the district administration, municipalities and village development committee offices will be required to hold interaction programs with locals, political leaders and other stakeholders on the major provisions in the new constitution as part of special campaign.
