KATHMANDU, Aug 5: Showing serious concerns over the protracted political stalemate, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has strongly asked leaders of various political parties to forge consensus at the earliest on standing issues and provide an outlet for the current impasse.
“The president cautioned against the lack of progress in consensus building even after two months and a week have passed since the dissolution of Constituent Assembly,” Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-N) Chairman Kamal Thapa told reporters after the meeting. [break]
According to Thapa, President Yadav also clearly told the leaders at the meeting that now they should be working in such a manner that there should not be a need to call them for another such meeting on the same issue.
At the meeting, the leaders were divided over whether the country should go for fresh polls. Most of the leaders, however, were in favor of holding new elections, informed Madhesi People’s Rights Forum Nepal (MPRF-N) Chairman Upendra Yadav.
“Saying that there is no alternative to consensus, the president was of the opinion that we all have to move ahead as dictated by the constitution,” CPN (ML) General Secretary CP Mainali said.
He further said today’s meeting offered an opportunity for the parties to understand one another’s opinions and expressed hope that this would be a major step towards beginning political dialogue afresh.
President Yadav held the meeting with leaders of 27 political parties represented in the erstwhile CA, at his residence in Shital Niwas. Yadav called the meeting following the parties´ persistent failure to forge consensus and end the existing political deadlock.
