NSJF marks World Sports Journalists Day

KATHMANDU, July 2: Marking the beginning of the three-day-long World Sports Journalists Day, Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) organized an interaction with the office bearers of National Sports Council (NSC) at its office on Monday.



The World Sports Journalists Day is celebrated across the globe on July 2, the founding anniversary of International Sports Journalists Association (AIPS). NSJF is the only authorized body of AIPS in Nepal.[break]



NSJF is organizing the Pulsar Sports Award on Wednesday, the last day of the World Sports Journalists Day. NSJF had set up the Sports Journalists Welfare Fund last year on the occasion of World Sports Journalists Day.



Speaking at the interaction, NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama said besides supporting Nepali sports, sports journalists were also guiding sports agencies on the right path through healthy criticism.



NSJF President Niranjan Rajbanshi said NSJF has been working to develop professionalism in sports journalism and also taking initiatives for the development of Nepali sports.



NSJF General Secretary Hemanta Kafle also expressed his views on the occasion, while Secretary Mahesh Acharya read the message from AIPS President Gianni Merlo.



Sports Journalism Award set up



The South Asian Sports Journalists Association Nepal (SASJAN) on Monday set up the Ishwarman Singh Memorial Sports Journalist Award in memory of late Singh, one of the founding members of the association.



Singh, a former staffer of the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), died on January 2, 2012 at the age of 75.



During a press conference held in the capital on Monday, SASJAN General Secretary Radheshyam Dahal said two sports journalists will be honored with the award every year. The awards will carry a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each.



Meanwhile, NSC Member Secretary Lama announced an additional Rs 15,000 each for the awards on behalf of NSC. He also lauded the role of journalists in the development of Nepali sports.



On the occasion, Lama also inaugurated www.khelpaper.com, a sports portal in Nepali language. NSC Vice-president Pitambar Timilsina also spoke on the occasion.
